PLM Implementation

The tool existed. The process did not.

Configuring Teamcenter
to Fit the Way They Work

A Tier-1 automotive supplier already had Teamcenter licensed and deployed — but engineers were not using it. BOMs, drawings, and engineering change approvals all ran through Excel and email. Eclectic Systems designed and configured the entire Teamcenter implementation from scratch — workflows, governance, IATF 16949-aligned ECR/ECO processes, and role-based assessments — to match exactly how the organisation operates.

Why the PLM Wasn't Being Used

The platform existed but lacked any configuration aligned to the organisation's processes. With no structured workflows, no role assignments, and no governance framework, teams defaulted to what they knew — spreadsheets and email.

Fragmented product data

BOMs, specs, CAD files, and drawings scattered across hundreds of Excel sheets — each department maintaining its own version with no mechanism to know which was current.

Zero change traceability

Engineering changes initiated via email chains with no audit trail, no structured impact assessment, and no controlled approval process across departments.

Inconsistent stakeholder participation

Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement, and Supply Chain were looped in via email threads — participation was informal, assessments were incomplete, and evidence was missing.

Constant rework and escalations

Production teams routinely received outdated drawings. Design changes did not reach the shop floor reliably — driving repeated rework cycles, customer complaints, and management escalations.

Monetary losses from poor change control

Unrecorded modifications led to wrong procurement orders, material scrap, production delays, and cost overruns — all avoidable with a governed process.

Knowledge lost at every handover

Project data lived in personal folders. Every new programme started from scratch — unable to leverage proven designs, lessons learned, or historical configurations.

What Eclectic Systems Configured

Rather than replacing the platform, we made it work — designing every workflow, assessment form, business rule, and dashboard to mirror how this organisation actually operates.

Centralised Product Data Repository

Configured the PLM platform to consolidate all product specifications, CAD models, engineering drawings, BOMs, compliance records, and change documentation into a single governed digital vault — replacing every Excel file and shared folder.

One version. Always current. Role-based access for every team.

Custom ECR / ECO Workflow Engine

Designed and built organisation-specific Engineering Change Request and Change Order workflows within Teamcenter — tailored to the client's approval hierarchy, APQP stage-gate reviews, and IATF 16949 requirements. Each change type follows a defined routing path with mandatory sign-off gates and compliance validation before approval. High-risk changes (functional safety, PPAP-impacted parts) trigger mandatory additional review steps automatically.

Every change became controlled, IATF 16949-compliant, and auditable from initiation to closure.

Role-Based Assessment Framework

Replaced informal email loops with structured, PLM-native assessment pages for each department: Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement, Supply Chain, and Programme Management. Each stakeholder receives a dedicated form with mandatory evidence capture fields — no assessment can be skipped.

Standardised evaluation with complete evidence trail per change.

Business Rules and Automated Triggers

Configured the PLM rule engine with organisation-specific automation: auto-notification for impacted stakeholders, escalation for overdue approvals, mandatory reviews for high-risk changes, compliance checks before approval gates, and automatic task generation for implementation teams.

Process ran itself — no more manual chasing or missed approvals.

Revision and Version Control

Enabled automated PLM-managed versioning for product revisions, document versions, and release histories — linked directly to the change records that created them. Teams always access the latest approved revision, with full history preserved.

Production teams always worked from the right data.

Real-Time Change Dashboards

Built management reporting dashboards on top of the PLM platform showing open changes, pending approvals, approval delays, change ageing, department performance, and implementation status — all live from PLM data, no spreadsheet consolidation needed.

Management had instant operational visibility for the first time.

End-to-End Lifecycle Traceability

Configured complete lifecycle traceability across requirements, designs, BOMs, change records, and manufacturing documentation. Every change carries a full chain: who initiated it, who assessed it, who approved it, which product revision it produced.

100% visibility into product evolution — audit-ready at any time.

Programme Knowledge Repository & Design Reuse

Structured Teamcenter as a searchable institutional memory for historical vehicle programmes, proven component configurations, PPAP documentation packages, and engineering lessons learned. For a Tier-1 supplier launching derivatives and carryover parts across multiple OEM programmes, this is a strategic capability — not just an archive. New programme teams now search before they design.

Measurable design reuse across OEM programmes and faster PPAP preparation on carryover parts.

Our Implementation Approach

Every phase was designed to minimise disruption while maximising adoption — with process design always preceding system configuration.

01

Process Discovery

Stakeholder workshops, existing process mapping, gap assessment, and compliance requirement analysis.

02

Solution Design

Future-state workflow design, role matrix definition, approval hierarchy mapping, and change governance framework.

03

PLM Configuration

Workflow development, assessment form creation, business rule implementation, dashboard and reporting setup.

04

Data Migration

Legacy data cleansing, document and BOM migration from Excel and shared drives, product structure validation.

05

Validation & Testing

User Acceptance Testing, process simulation, workflow validation, and data integrity verification.

06

User Adoption & Go-Live

Role-based training, user documentation, production deployment, and hypercare support.

Adoption outcome: Within 3 months of go-live, 95% of all Engineering Change Requests were being raised natively in Teamcenter. Zero email-initiated changes remained in circulation. Engineers who had resisted PLM for years were using the system daily — because the workflows matched the way they already worked, rather than forcing them to adapt to a generic process.
